Billionaire Girl c.13

Download here.

Wow, it's been a while. What was the reason for the delay? Well, I happened to pick up Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari with Maigo, so there's that. There were also a few other reasons, mostly ones relating to either other translating projects getting in the way or life in general.

I keep forgetting how few chapters are left. Luckily after chapter 14, it should be smooth sailing to chapter 17, the final chapter. I apologize for my English in this release post. I just got back from Disney Land and I am pretty tired.

  6. Do you think you'll do the short stories from the volumes at all?

    1. I wasn't aware there were any. There weren't any in volume 2. If there are any in volume 3, we don't have the raws.

    3. Oh, you're talking about the text stories at the very end? Hmmm... It's hard to say. Chances are I probably won't due to time constraints, though.

  11. Hope Disneyland was fun! Pleasant surprise to know that you are working on Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari. I read that first chapter and loved it. Art was good as well. Thanks for translating billionaire girl. I appreciate your efforts!

    1. The pleasure's all mine. I'm glad you enjoyed Kekkon. I'm not looking forward to the second chapter. So little exposition in this one means that the next chapter will have lots of explanation :p

    2. Ugh i can imagine. A text heavy chapter seems like the bane of all translators. Though, i hope you'll excuse me, as a reader, for being excited at the prospect of such a chapter.

    3. It's fine. I'm quite excited to see how this story is going to pan out myself. I actually really love writing exposition and narration, but it can be time consuming to get it to flow right.

Text heavy pages are definitely painful, but at the same time they can be really fun. You're limited to the words you can use in normal dialog, but in huge explanations (kind of like the one in this BG chapter) give you a lot more room. You don't have to worry about bubble space usually, or whether certain phrasing will match a character's personality or not.

      Stuff like that~

  12. I definitely understand what you are talking about and share your excitement in the matter. Though i imagine it must be difficult to find translators that are familiar enough with the language to translate mangas with subjects so esoteric in nature. To clarify, i'm sure there are many who are comfortable enough in quotidian or conversational Japanese, but i'm guessing that the words for these economics terms aren't common knowledge. On that note, i'm glad you are familiar with them.

    1. Oh, I'm not familiar with them at all. Depending on the chapter, I have to do anywhere from 20 minutes worth to an hour or two of research. This was my primary concern when picking up Billionaire Girl, which is why I recruited people who /are/ knowledgeable. I have an actual stock trader checking all the parts I'm uncertain about for accuracy.

Interestingly enough, I just hit the hellish portion of chapter 14 where Yukari goes off for roughly 6 pages on how to choose companies to invest money in. I am currently crying inside as I research every single word she utters in Japanese, then English lol. I have learned way more about stock trading than I ever wanted to. It would be more enjoyable to translate if she didn't have to take 5 paragraphs to explain a concept that only needs 5 sentences to be understood, but that's just how these kinds of manga are.

It is true, finding translators with technical knowledge is difficult. The problem isn't so much being familiar with the source language, but being able to understand and express it naturally in the target language.

Also, it feels like I'm slowly writing more and more with every reply. Hope you don't mind :p

    2. Nah i don't mind at all. It is interesting to get your perspective on these matters. I have never worked with scanlation before, but i've always been interested and definitely benefited enough to the point that i should start to give back. I mean I've always made it a point to thank the scanlators, but i should probably learn to clean/typeset so i can actually help out.

I was not aware that so much extra effort was needed to translate billionaire girl.Makes me even more thankful that there are actually people willing to put in the time. I shudder at the notion of having to wade through six pages of economics jargon. I suppose it doesn't make it any easier that you have to cross that bridge for both Japanese and English.

I imagine expressing it effectively in the target language is difficult as well. On that note, i think the effects fan translators have on these literary works is interesting. Many of the works that scanlators have and will work on will never get an official English translation and thus, the perception of these mangas by thousands of english speakers worldwide will forever be influenced by just a single person who decided to help out on the net. To elaborate, their(your) interpretations, by virtue of being the only one available, serve as a medium for countless people to experience another author's work. I find this phenomenon simply fascinating.

Once again, thanks for all the hard work! Also, i created a google blogger profile so i can actually keep track of what i say

    3. It is certainly an interesting hobby. It can be pretty time consuming though, so you should only work on stuff you really enjoy. Finding a group willing train you may be a little difficult, but as long as you're dedicated to learning a given skill, you should manage fine. I would suggest going with a group where you read a lot of, if not most of their series.

Even if you never end up helping out with scanlation, I don't think you should feel bad about it. A lot of scanlators like to villainize their readers by calling them leechers, but the entire point is to translate it for those who can't read it themselves, so I don't see the point in using a word with such a negative connotation.

Regardless, the idea that what you translate will become how people perceive a given manga is certainly the most enjoyable part of scanlation. It can also be scary because if you make a mistake, you're literally ruining the story. The other problem is that a lot of scanlators go on ridiculous power trips because they are aware of this phenomenon, as you like to call it. Still, it's definitely been my most positive time-wasting hobby I've had yet. I get to practice my Japanese and writing skills, AND somebody benefits from it.

For Billionaire Girl, it actually isn't that terrible. While the author may be an economic buff, he makes sure not to get too technical. The only problem with that is that some of his explanations are over-simplistic and vague, but that happens all the time with Japanese anyway. It is still a pain to translate, but it's worth it, so I don't mind :p
